Introducing the "Emoji Neko" series, a contemporary rendition on the beloved "Maneki Neko" figurines deeply rooted in Japanese culture. These are a homage to my heritage and inspired by my childhood surrounded by these iconic symbols of good luck. Each is a slip cast porcelain based on a hand sculpted master. Drawing upon the traditional charm of the "Beckoning Cat," these ceramic pieces feature an emotional (Emoji) mask that adorns the face of each cat. This mask serves as a canvas for conveying the true feeling of the cat and contextualizes a modern placement to this timeless symbol. This variation, the "Chatty" cat exudes a sense of joy and vibrancy, its brightly colored exterior and smiling face, seemingly engaged in conversation. This series pays homage to the cultural significance of these iconic symbols while infusing them with a contemporary flair. They also serve as a reflection of the cultural tendency for Japanese people to mask their emotions, often concealing their true feelings behind a stoic exterior. Through this artistic representation, I aim to explore the complexities of human emotion and the intricate interplay between outward expression and inner turmoil.
