KUMO CRANE - 雲鶴鳥

paper clay & glaze, 2023

10”x 8”x 6”

In this ceramic sculpture, I've endeavored to capture the delicate elegance of paper origami, a craft deeply intertwined with Japanese culture. Called Kumo Crane (literally meaning Cloud Crane), it is named as a combination of Japanese and English, much like my heritage, as a half-Japanese American. Crafted from paper clay, each sculpted fold seeks to emulate the simplicity and grace of traditional paper folding techniques, paying homage to the craftsmanship passed down through generations. It is adorned with line art, depicting serene clouds and rolling hills, to evoke traditional Japanese illustration and serve as a reminder of the profound connection between nature and art. As an artist with Japanese heritage, this sculpture holds a special place in my heart. It's a tribute to the artistic traditions that have shaped my identity and inspired my creative journey.
